Jal Jeevan Mission intends to supply sufficient and safe drinking water via individual household tap connections by 2024 for all rural households in India. The program will also incorporate sustainable measures for the source as compulsory components, like recycling and recharge through greywater management conservation of water and the harvesting of rainwater. This Jal Jeevan Mission will be founded on a collaborative approach to water. It will comprise extensive Information, Education and communication as an essential element in the program. It is expected that the Jal Jeevan Mission will be built on a collaborative approach to water. JJM seeks to create the Jan Andolan for water, which will make the issue a priority for everyone.

Vision of “Jal Jeevan Mission”

Every rural home has water to drink in an adequate quantity and of the prescribed quality on a daily and on a long-term basis with reasonable service delivery costs that result in improvements in living standards for rural communities.

Mission

  • States/UTs are developing a participatory rural water supply strategy to provide the availability of drinking water in the long term for every rural family and public institution. School, GP building, Anganwadi centre, Health centre, wellness centers and more.
  • States/UTs for the creation of water supply infrastructures so that every household has a Functional Tap Connection (FHTC) by 2024. Water in sufficient quantity and quality as prescribed is available regularly.
  • Rural communities and GPs to develop, implement the plan, oversee, manage and operate their village water supply systems.
  • States/UTs to create strong institutions focused on service delivery and the sector’s financial viability through encouraging utility-based methods.
  • Capacity building for the participants and increase awareness within the communities on the importance of water in improving living standards.

Purposes

  • To connect taps functionally to Anganwadi centres, schools, GP and Wellness centres, Health centres, and community buildings.
  • To encourage and promote the community’s ownership of its property through contributions in kind, cash or labour, as well as volunteer work.
  • To assess the functioning of tap connections.
  • In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of the water supply system, i.e. water infrastructure, water supply and the funds to support regular O&M.
  • To develop and empower the people in the field to ensure that the requirements of plumbing, construction and electrical work water quality management, water treatment, protection of catchments, O&M, etc. are addressed in both the short and long term.
  • To raise awareness about the various aspects and importance of safe drinking water and the involvement of all stakeholders in a manner that makes water everybody’s business.
