What is Ultrafiltration?

Ultrafiltration (UF) is a pressure-driven filtration system that uses industrial & home water filtration. It was eliminate suspended solids, Algae, Bacteria and other pathogens to produce clean water.

The ultrafiltration membrane pore size is around 0.01 micron that means water particle passes through below 0.01-micron size. It would eliminate all these larger particles and may get rid of some viruses.

Ultrafiltration Working Principle

In this, water is pushed towards the membrane using hydrostatic force. This membrane has small holes through which water molecules can pass, but micro components and germs cannot pass because their size is larger than the size of the water molecules. Hence these impurities get separated from the water, and the UF water purifier provides us with pure water to drink.

The UF makes hollow fibres membrane material, and water flows inside the shell. Suspended solids and large pore sizes are held in the membrane surface & clean water passes through the membrane. Ultrafiltration is the same category filtration system as reverse osmosis, nanofiltration & microfiltration system. The only difference is the size of particles held during filtration.

UF is best for the removal of suspended solids, colloids, bacteria, and algae with respect to other filtration systems. This purification process is completely natural without chemicals and electricity.

Ultrafiltration Process

It is a pressure-driven water filtration process. In this filtration process, membrane pore size plays a vital role. The water passes to filter through the pump. We need 2.0 to 2.5 kg/cm2 water pressure to process the filtration. Blocked contaminant the UF membrane surface & clean water passes through the membrane. This filter needs backwash every 20 – 30 minutes in operation and chemical cleaning after complication ten cycle of backwash. This filtration system is run through automation or semi-automation.

Where Ultrafiltration System used?

  • Drinking water treatment
  • RO plant pretreatment
  • Wastewater treatment
  • Cooling water treatment

Advantage of UF

Ultrafiltration system is an eco-friendly water filtration system. It has a recovery rate of more than 95%. This water filtration widely uses in-home water filtration & industrial water filtration system.

  1. A minimal amount of water wastage during this filtration process.
  2. ECO-friendly filtration system.
  3. 99 % of bacteria and viruses removed.
  4. Does not remove essential minerals in the water.
  5. Easy handle & run automation.
  6. Low maintenance cost.
  7. The system operates at low pressure.

Disadvantage of UF

  • Does not remove dissolved inorganics.
  • Does not remove dissolved solids.

What ultrafiltration remove from water?

UF has removed the particle size 4000 times smaller with respect to human hair. It eliminates more than 95% of water contaminants.

  • Suspended solid particle
  • Turbidity
  • Bacteria & algae
  • Silica
  • Silt
